Shlomo
Shamir ( Mészáros Józsi
), the builder and manager of this site, passed away
on 1.1.2005 . Since 1995, much before the internet became so
popular, he started the idea of preserving the heritage and history of
the Jewish people from Gyor ,Hungary.
Slowly, but with lot of ambition and determination, the site became the
center for the survivors from Gyor area, their friends and families. It
was not easy to persuade the old generation, since the idea of internet
was not available as today. Despite the difficulties, it started to be
recognized as the right idea. More documents and photos filled the site.
Each one has a story to tell.
The most excited moment was when a
brother and sister ,who did not know of each other, found out that they
both alive. Another friend found his classmate. The site serves as a

SEARCH for information about NATHAN HEMLISH
A school in Isearl is doing a research
about a person named NATHAN HEMLISH .
who was born in Gyor and moved to Israel
after WWII and killed in action in 1948 when he served in the Israeli forces
(IDF.
His wife name MIRYAM, and
he was in KIBUTZ MIVTACHIM for a while.

Search Relatives Erzsebet
Benko
I am seeking any information regarding my
mother's family.
My mother's name is Erzsebet
Benko; she was born in approximately October 1940
and was given up by her mother when she was about two months old.
The family that raised her never officially adopted her and while they were never specific
about the reason why this was the case, it is quite possible she was
Jewish and was given up by her parents because of the circumstances.
There are also other indicators that my mother was Jewish. She was
raised by a family in Vas county, Hungary. The family who raised my mother
said that Erzsebet's mother
had the accent of someone who comes from the Puszta (Plains) region
of Hungary and that her name was Ilona Benko.
We do not have an exact birthdate but
it may be around 1912 to 1915.
I would welcome contact with any family with the surname
Benko (with or without an accent on the letter 'o' and with or without specific links to an
Erzsebet or Ilona Benko) that lost family
in the Shoa or who has survivors.

This site has been established in memory of the
Martyrs from Gyor and the surrounding region. It is also intended to
strengthen the connection between the magnificent past of the Gyor community
and the survivors of the Shoa, those who are still living in Gyor and those
descendants of the community who have been dispersed across the globe.
Even though we may be separated by thousands of miles, this is a site
where friends can meet, a place where people can exchange information and
where we can help each other discover our heritage.
At this site we are hoping to collect and save everything we know
about Jewish Gyor, for us and for the coming generations. Please contact us if you have

I would like to add the following search

Schnurmacher family. My late grandfather
Beno and his 3 brothers
Beno was married to
Olga Schischa. He died young and is buried in
Gyor. Who were the rest of the Schnurmachers were did they come from
and where are they now.
